Accountants are often perceived as individuals of integrity who approach their profession with a strict sense of interpretation. Simultaneously, many business owners desire resourceful accountants capable of navigating within legal confines while pushing the boundaries where possible. An effective accountant should possess a touch of wizardry, catering to entrepreneurs at the forefront of innovation. This brings me to the concept of the magic square, where the manipulation of numbers occurs within defined constraints. The magic square boasts an intriguing history dating back to ancient times, notably to the legendary prehistoric figure Emperor Yu and the Lo Shu river.
I selected the renowned magic square featured in Albrecht Dürer’s 1514 engraving “Melencolia.” Notably, the year itself is embedded within this square. Dürer’s magic square is exceptional due to its unique property: the sum of numbers in rows, columns, and diagonals all equate to the same value (34). This consistency extends further: the sum of the four corner numbers, the four central numbers, the clusters of 2×2 numbers in each corner, the two numbers within the middle of the first and last columns, and those in the top and bottom rows—all resonate with this number magic.
As a result, the magic square from Dürer’s engraving became the defining logo of this enterprise. In addition, I introduced the concept of allowing entrepreneurs to narrate engaging stories while symbolically capturing the essence of their services.
