Cashcheque

Collecting money at the Postoffice

Client: Postgiro
Production: Staatsdrukkerij en Uitgeverij
Design: Jelle van der Toorn Vrijthoff

In the 1970s, the cash cheque was popular among giro account holders. With these cheques you could get cash at post offices. At a certain point the cheques were frequently being forged, which called for a new design with adequate safety features. The design was made for a formulieren zetmachine as used by the State Printing House at the time. This machine could produce beautiful thin lines with the utmost precision, yet not thin enough for security printing nor could it do curved lines. Which is why I didn’t use the line width as a safety feature, but the space between the lines. Which this machine could muster with an accuracy of a hundredth of a millimeter. In two-color (OF DUOTONE?) printing, the space between the lines was sufficient to boost safety significantly.
